KEYS IDEAS EXTRACTED FROM MY PROJECT PROPOSAL

  • Contrast the pretense that is Religion with the organic belief that is faith

Larmes (Tears) by Man Ray (1930–1932)

'...the woman's plaintive upward glance and mascara-encrusted lashes seem intended to invoke wonder at the cause of her distress. The face belongs to a fashion model who cries tears of glistening, round glass beads; the effect is to aestheticize the sentiment her tears would normally express. Man Ray made this photograph in Paris around the time of his breakup with his lover Lee Miller, and the woman's false tears may relate to that event in the artist's life.'

South Pacific 'has world's worst plastic pollution'

  • "there's no escaping plastic pollution even in the most distant parts of our oceans".
  • how plastic debris is affecting the environment on a global scale
  • 'More than 300 million tonnes of plastic produced worldwide each year is not recycled' This part of the article reminds me of the lies we are told by authorities.. we are told things are recycled but in fact its all a lie. This reminds me of the biggest lie of all coffee cups. - coffee cups are

My Image - Rubbish pile

  • I viewed the scene exactly as I photographed it in front of me, walking home. Its shocking to see how much waste we produce on a daily basis with consumer items and processed food packagings.
  • I have edited this photo to bring forth the strong blue colours from the packaging of the rubbish pile.
  • I love the almost tangy colours found in this image, such as the sickening greens and browns meshed with the bright blues.
  • I love how the rubbish is scattered amongst the nature/ the grass. It gives the image a meaningful layer, of the shocking reality that is suggesting that waste has overcome nature.
  • The colours and scattered quality of the objects remind me of Cohens work I have looked at prior.

Found Image ~ Idol Jesus statue made entirely from Plastic

  • Idol is hollow
  • Idol is plastic.. made from a mould and mass produced.. made to appear as if it wear made from ceramic but is a false illusion!
  • ALL WHITE Jesus - Im inspired by this 'pure colour' that they used to cover the figure, reminds me of white cake icing?
  • I used found one use plastic to represent a halo with light shining through
  • I love the ironic sense that is shown through the popularised 'M' sign from McDonalds, being used in the same context as a Halo.
  • this inspires me to think about using 'one use plastics as accessories' to decorate 'holy people'. Like collaging this McDolands Halo over an fake 'idolised' image of Jesus.

Selected quotes from evangelist Billy Graham

"Not the cross that hangs on the wall or someone's neck. But the REAL CROSS of Christ."

"On our Churches we have a Cross, it's embossed on our bibles, it's an ornament we wear on our necks, Christians and non-christians."

-Billy Graham

"Crucifying Christ, now automated and mass produced"

  • I love this gif of the reparative crucifying of Christ. It is intense and slightly uncomfortable to watch. I personally cannot bare to watch more then a couple of loops at a time.
  • It reminds me of the repetitive action of throwing away our single use plastics. It's a selfish act. As we act selfish repeatedly, we crucify Christ over and over again.

- sinful to mass produce because we all know the effects of one use plastics, and we still do it despite the fact of the sinful effects it creates. - death of planet, death in people also.

"Diverging from their ultra-gloss predecessors, however, Gleason has mutated the surface of the Absorbed pieces so that the reflective quality of the silver nitrate is transformed into a pearlescent glow. Applying a prismatic array of hues, these paintings become all about colour and texture."

  • I love the pearly texture of his paintings
  • I love how his work radiates a sort of glow, and I would love to introduce these qualities in my own work.

My Image - FALL (1964) by Bernard Cohen @ the TATE Britain

On a visit to the Tate Britian I came across this piece. I was initially struck by the infuse of colours and the cross like symbol that sits above what seems to be an open book. Being a Christian I immediately assume that this is a visual representnation of the bible. I love how Cohen has used an effect of layering paint to seem as if certain areas of the picture are deep within the background and others right in front.

I am surprised at how the artist has used oil paints to create what looks like almost graffiti paint, sprayed onto canvas.

His use of colour is interesting as he mixes bright colours near the cross symbol, with clashing mixes of dark orange/green and brown. I get the feeling that they don't go together almost purposefully, as you also would naturally associate these colours with a religious symbolism.

This piece I came across on one of the days I was preparing for my interviews. As at this time we were starting to think about our theme for our final project, this piece was a huge starting point for my final project idea juices to flow. It took my mind to ponder on the idea of bringing my personal faith into context and looking into how colours and symbolism can play a huge part into print design.
