'the mister, the mistress and the mattress went to tea'
My Images ~ Stills from the film 'The Duchess'
My Image - corner of room with table side and bed sheets textures from a painting at the TATE BRITAIN
I have decided to focus on this particular section of the painting as I was inspired particularly by the bedside table. I love the still life on the table, the silver tray with freshly cut fruits and how part of the table is cut from the viewer. This gives me the indication that we do not know if the fruit and juice are the only things on that table. Could we be blockaded from seeing something more? I am also inspired by the messy crinkled sheets beside the table. This exact picture of 'a morning after', could it have been a deep sleep or perhaps a night of lust. I can see it is morning through the artists use of light coming through the left side of the painting, reflected on the oranges. I love the nets pattern wall paper, with floral accents in between each net. This alongside the lace pillow trim and brocade table cloth, this scene gives for a romantic mood. Lastly, the way in which I have photographed the picture, has included some of the frame also. I wanted to included the frame because I believe it is also a major part of the artwork. It gives the photo a sense of status and importance. I will want to research into frames in jewlery and this gather ideas of frames in clothing to include in my design ideas. I have also cut of the figure in this image, leaving only the curs of her hair on show. Could she be asleep, maybe dead, or maybe laid beside her lover, or another? By exploring this image I have been able to cultivate many ideas to take further in my project. I would liken to push forth the mesh pattern and the ideas of frames in my designs and explore the idea of the bed sheets as being a key symbol to sleeping forever (death sleep) and secret between the sheets (adultery).
Diana kissing Dodi appeared in the Sunday Mirror on August 10, 1997, as she vacationed on Dodi's father's yacht, the Jonikal. Three weeks before their death.
Inspired by...
- Poor quality vintage paparazzi photo - faded effect
- Dianna's light orange swimsuit print with flower motif ~ similar to my print designs in my sketchbook
- Sky blue background ~ similar to sky print in my sketchbook and relating to heaven
- This photo looks like its almost from a dream place, like heaven. It plays a image in my head of Dianna and Dodi would be like in heaven, embracing their love, amongst the clouds.
- I'm inspired by... the diamond cross hatch design of the iron fence. I love the plants coming through the fence, almost reminds me of my Diana memorial piled plant print. I have gotten an idea to layer the cross sticking on top of one of my prints. This will give it more depth. Could I possibly use a print and layer it with some diamond mesh material? or make my own mesh material to layer over my prints?
- The white dots in between the croses remind me of the tuffs in between mattress and inspire me to put gems or sequins inside the tuffs of my samples.
Inspired by...
- the stain is faded in the middle but pigmented around the edges, it reminds me of the gem framing. I could use the idea of the pigment need edge to experiment with framing the print design 'mattress stains' with my gold gems.
- the tufting of the mattress, creates three dimensional padded effect, this will be interesting to experiment in areas of the body.
- The padded effect reminds of light weight fabrics that would allow the wearer to almost float
- I love the diamond pattern created from the placement of the tuffs, it reminds me of the mesh serving domes I saw by kitchen wear designer Mackenzie Childs at the Harrods store.
After the Grayson Perry talk, I was inspired to look at some of his pottery work. I came across this pieces entitled 'Good Old England'. England is renowned for their tea -usually depicted in a beautiful periwinkle and white fine china teacup. In reality a true English 'cuppa' would be sat in a faded 'footie' mug the size of a pint. I love how Grayson has captured his rendition of the famous English tea cup by almost meshing both of these ideas into his piece. His use of blue ink on top of the off-white ceramic resembles the style of fine china in contrast with the not-so-fine assembly of the piece. I believe he has purposefully left areas of the clay to be exposed creating this interesting disassembled version of a cup of English tea.
This piece makes me think of the deep context that surrounds my Harrods project. This idea of the utopian with the reality of the imperfect. The 'Good Old English' cup of tea isn't as perfect as the world makes it to be. This reminds me of relationships in marriage. This idea of what the world demands to be perfect and pristine but in fact is usually half-baked and broken. This makes me think of all the picture-perfect instagram couples who flaunt their relationships and colossal wedding rings all over the internet, but in fact are unhappy and not sincere in their love. Sometimes the most marvellous cups of tea are not served in the most beautiful of containers .
Princess Dianna known for wearing Shades of Blue ~ visual similarities to fairytale Princess Cinderella
finding the Dodi blue
Inspired by... the peculiarity of the 1997 memorial at Harrods...
- There really is something extraordinary about the 1997 memorial in comparison to the one the stands at Harrods today. From the bright yellowish gold frame work to the placement of flowers, all scattered over the table. Comparing this to todays memorial I saw at Harrods, there was far more 'greenery' from the flowers visible than the actual flowers themselves. This is interesting, as it reminds me of sort of fields of flowers rather than flowers set for a memorial. Flowers for memorials are usually more colour and less green, where as the 1997 one for Dianna and Dodi seem to be the opposite.
- Gold circular/oval framing of photos, has a feeling of importance and love. When photos are put in a curved shaped frame, this usually is to frame ones face, a significant other. Someones face who you love to admire often when looking at the frame. Naturally we feel a sense of comfort and homeliness around curved objects, as comparison to rigid straight lines objects and shapes. I am inspired by the use of round framing in the couples memorial at Harrods, and would like to integrate this motif into my designs.
- I find it fascinating and interesting that in the late 1990s where this memorial would have been built, the memorial designer must have been 'not too bothered' about the fact that the chosen photos of Dianna and Dodi had mismatching backgrounds. That seems like a very 90's thing to do in my opinion to just ignore 'asthetics' and go with 'whatever'. This however if was to be built today would never be done in this way if not for solely intentional reasons, with photoshop technology at its highest, there would be no reason otherwise. Especially if related to a member of the royal family where standards should be at its highest.
- Now I guess you can say that the background colour of ones photo for a memorial is unimportant, however I find it compelling almost slightly amusing that they are incredibly mismatched. I highly doubt this was intentional. I usually find little things that are usually negligible to be huge forms of inspiration and I love to have encountered this mishap. Also I realised that the photo I took of the memorial recently, Dianna and Dodi had a same background colour of greenish-grey. Some one eventually must have realised the mismatch of colours and decided to change it to fit the standards of today. Unfortunately I have not found any information as to why the memorial seemed to change, who did it or why but nevertheless this becomes interesting for me to use. Just when I feel I needed to introduce another colour into my project to balance the green and the golds, the Dodi Blue seems a perfect fit.
Inspired by...
- the collection of flowers remind me of the bouquet's at Diann's memorial
- the reflection of the sunlight on the shallow river
- the shallow river exposing the grass and plants under the water
- looks like a perfect setting for using for collage for creating the 'Harrods Heaven'. I love the water path leading to somewhere. Reminds me of the pathway to heaven, or like the road to wonderland, from story Alice in wonderland.
I find the elevator from Harrods the most interesting part of the building in terms of structure and detail. It is such luxurious small space, covered in golden mirrored decor and accents. I love the attention to detail that covers the space, from floor to ceiling. I find this intriguing because this is no ordinary elevator, you would come across in, for example an office or dentistry, the type that in dull, grey, steel walls.
I like this idea of the elevator journey being as much a leisure as other areas of the department store. It is not an obvious one, but one we have all embarked upon at some point in our childhood. The short but thrilling ride of the elevator, and that moment the doors open, remind me of a familiar scene of the discovery of Narnia throughout the wardrobe doors in the novel, the lion the witch and the wardrobe by CS Lewis. This idea of two large doors opening to another dimension.
Having gathered these ideas, I would like to included this mystery of whats on the other side? in my own work and design. I would like to explore this idea of hidden elements to 'other worlds' in this project, inspired by the Harrods elevator.
Vintage Harrods Tea towel
My Image ~ Rubber marks
Im inspired by the marks and mix of colours faded and pigmented on my rubber. I use the rubber to erase some colouring I did over some illustrations, I then saw that the rubber has picked up some of the colours and I like the effect that was left.
My video ~ 'who spoiled my tea?'
My Images ~ Selected stills from film 'The Duchess'
My Image ~ discovering colour scheme ~ very drawn to the periwinkle 'surf' colour
Princess Diana (wearing Periwinkle jumper) on the Jonikal, the yacht Mohamed Al Fayed bought exclusively to entertain her. July 1997
Scene from film 'War and Peace' (1956 ) (Audrey Hepburn as Natasha Rostova )
Inspired by...
- Feminine sun dress she's wearing coordinating with pearly wall paper
- 'It's so easy for you men!' - this idea of being a single mother in comparison to being a single father
- the innocence of her facial expression
- leaning on the beside table, the table becomes a feature with its items and the curtain also in coordination with what she is wearing and the wall paper
I love this photoshopped mattress in a very cloudy blue sky, it brings a dream like delusion to the mattress. I'm inspired by the juxtaposition of an object such as a mattress in a setting you would not expect it to be in. It appears to be floating. This gather a visual in my mind of possibly putting my 'princess' deisgn illustrations onto some mattress sample or mattress designs to show her 'sleeping' after the tea being 'spoiled'.
I question as to WHY the mattress has a print on it. The mattress is usually cover by a mattress protector and a fitted sheet, alongside various bed sheets. Therefore the print will not be visible. It's interesting for me to consider this idea of a hidden print, relating to the idea of the parent hiding the truth from their child by inventing a story.
- I first saw this image as decor for the MACKENZIE CHILDS set up on my visit to Harrods. I am inspired by the vintage illustration style of the cattle. But what catches my attention the most is the satire quality of the cows stacked onto of one another. It quite surreal and almost like it's from another world, part of a dream like characters from Alice in wonderland.
- I am inspired by the idea of layering and stacking from this image. The cow stack reminds me of the tea cups tacked on top of one another, or the mattresses stacked from the princess and the pea. I would like to use this idea in my design development and in design experimentations.
The layered pillows remind me of the layered mattress from the princess and the pea. I love the combination of random prints from the pillows all squished together. There is a uncomfortable feeling looking at the mix matched of prints but at the same time is eye catching and calls for attention.
Brooch pin. Vintage R.J. Graziano 1997 Princess Diana Brooch 'Englands Rose Memorial' Gold Tone
ANALYSING THE BROACH
- Gaudy Gold colour Jewellery from 1997 - floral motifs for Dianna Memorial keepsakes
- Broaches are usually an accent of an outfit, almost places in the midst of something. In between where fabric meet or to highlight an area of the top half of your clothing.
- Usually worn around the Chest Area to one seen immediately and have most attention.
Circles and ovals
These rounded shapes tend to send a positive emotional message of harmony and protection. The circle is often used in a logo to represent unity, commitment, love or community. Curves in general when used in shapes tend to be viewed as feminine in nature while straight lined shapes are more masculine.
Circles have no beginning or end, they represent life and the lifecycle. The circle along with the oval is readily found in nature with the sun, moon and earth, not to mention fruit and flowers.
Circles have a free sense of movement – wheels, balls, merry go rounds. Their movement may also represent power and energy.
Due to their curved lines, ovals and circle are graceful and complete. They give a sense of integrity and perfection.
They are not used as much in design for spacial reasons, but this means that when they are used, that they attract more attention than their right angled counter parts.
Cultural:
Circles have been used for generations to represent unity. The wedding band for example is a world wide symbol of commitment for marriage.

'Experience & Influence'
- Death of a Grand Princess - death is an experience not only for the deceased, but for the people who have lived around them and loved them. This death of a grand Princess caused an expense for people unlike any other. Her influence was immense. She was idolised.
- Monument - (the memorials in Harrods act like a gathering point) - considering something thats effected a lot of people.
- Diana was a Monarch - one of most important Monarchs of the 20th Century - and Princess of all times
- How are the audience's perspective? - Diana had a drastic influence on the public. The Harrods experience has an influence on their customers. The Elevator is an experience of its own, taking you to different areas. Clothing and fashion has an influence on the wearer and the viewer.
- Think about creating your own experience with the clothes I design and the images and artwork I make.
Alice in Wonderland Garden decor ~ inspired by the grass patches in checkboard format, leading pathway
Researching into different shades of Green.. I found a pallet with various shades and their names. I found the shade that is closest to the Harrods shade of Green and that of the Uniform of the 'Green Man'.
Pantone usually names colours after people, once they have deceased. It this idea that the colour represents the person and associated with who they where or what they were most known for. This Harrods shade of Green is named 'John Hinde 1978' I did looked up this name and date and didn't find much solid information. However I found many links on eBay and amazon to illustrated post cards, from what I assume were designed by Hinde and popularised at that time period, now being sold online. I like how I have managed to find an interesting point to branch out into by just exploring a certain shade of the Harrods Green. I would like to develop this interest of mine in this particular shade of Green and where it is taking me in my work.
Also relating to colours being named after people, I have started to think about all the memorials that have been named after Princess Dianna.. and plan to visit the ones over London, for further inspiration.
Interesting aspects of this illustration of the occurrences outside the elevator at Harrods
- It is printed on a tea towel which is sold at the store... I like un-glossed, almost faded ink effect in which the illustration in printed because of the material of the tea towel
- I like the simple illusion style of the peoples face, missing pigment of skin, simple colour clothes and block colours.
- The shadows of the 'unimportant' people as the main focus are the people engaging with the elevator
- the little motif of the harrods bag and green man are present in the print
