Print Design Idea

  • Finding objects and materials that suit my colour scheme and theme of the project.
  • This plastic bag and washcloth will be vital materials for the development of sample making in my project. This is because they not only suit my colour scheme with their shades of blue, but also the function of the object (being a rubbish bag and cloth for cleaning) counterpart my subject matter of 'the working class'.
  • I love how these two are contrasting yet complimentary because they are both the same pattern but demonstrated in completely different ways. They both are made from a synthetic materials and both shown blue and white parallel lines, creating a striped pattern. I like that these materials and their pattern also related to my theme of 'straight lines' which stem from my initial start of the project which is the corduroy material.
  • These materials will be introduced into my project and will be vital materials to play around with my collages and print ideas.

WORK AND FREEDOM

"Slavers Revenging their Losses"

  • positions of slaves have shocking resemblance to workers... hunched back, tired bodies, repetative life labour

Kara Walker

  • uses slaves and common theme
  • use sillouettes and figures to tell a true story, she doesn't need words, or even moving image, or even detailed image to show the spry. his images are only black and white and they tell such a vivid impact on the viewer. I am inspired by her use of the sillouetes of the human figure in various positions to tell a story.

Repaired Corduroy Workwear Pant

  • Genuine vintage product, repaired by owner
  • Inspired by the repaired stitches and patches on the trousers. I love how the patches and stitches are not of the same colour as the original trousers, suggests a lack of consideration to the appearance of the garment... worn not was a piece of 'high fashion' but rather for 'real use'.
  • Its so interesting to me that this trousers aren a pair of 'genuine' workwear that have been repaired by the owner to be of use again. The fact that they must have been covered in scruff and holes suggests the owner were putting them to good use, and the fact that they were repaired time and time again suggests the owner would have had the conditionions to source a 'new pair'
  • Make me think of this garment as a piece of history and can image the owner had spend a large portion of his life in in these trousers

  • Makes me think of the way we treat clothes today.. if there were to have a mark or hole in a piece of clothing today would we go as far to repair it in the same manner as the owner of this pair? In this throwaway and fast paced world we live in, a pair of trousers in this state would be considered useless and rubbish.

Men imprisoned (1888)

  • lines and stripes - lines of corduroy
  • layering of the vertical lines in layers of clothes
  • imprisonment: trapped with no way out: the lifestyle of a working man, a prisoner of their own labour, a prisoner to money, needs work for money, needs money to live, becomes slave of work in order to survive.

Factory Workers - 19th Century

What draws me to this image is the almost linear patterns created by the repetition of the workers. These linear rows of people remind me of the perfectly straight lines of the cord in the Corduroy textile.

I'm inspired by the repetition of of the people. I think this use of repeating of similar forms, but not exactly the same, create an interesting image. At first glance you assume that the people in the photo are almost repetition of the same person, as they are dressed the same, are facing the same way and wear the same facial expression. When looked into with more detail you notice that these are in fact all different people. It's interesting how people are in fact all men and are all different ages.

Observing this image I am unsure if it's a genuine documentary image of a real life event, or a manipulation of many images of factory workers merged together. Either way I am inspired by the collage appearance of this image and inspired me to use this idea of collaging in my work.

  • Collection of various working men - look the same but in fact different - Interesting effect.. just about/ almost the same appearance but not
  • This idea of the Working Class being 'all the same' - no sense of individuality or importance
  • Collaging technique of layering people, looking like a Crowd/Protest/Church Service - gives a sense of power in the people
  • Repetitive lines and rows of people relating to the linear cords of the Corduroy Textile
