VINTAGE BOLLYWOOD POSTER

  • Inspired by the vivid colours, completely saturated and bold text, which to me is completely foreign
  • 'bad photoshop' collage style ways of layering the characters faces
  • shade of gold, vivid blues and lots of red
  • Inspired by graphic style drawing

PRIMARY RESEARCH - Mixed Raced Facial Features

  • This Photo I took of a girl, as I was fascinated by her unique appearance. The tone of her skin covered in dark freckles inspired me to think of ways of making making to create ideas for print designs

The science of freckles

  • MELANIN - the gene that makes freckles!
  • Inspired by this PIGMENT PROTEIN that effects the EYES, SKIN & HAIR of a person.
  • Inspired by this idea of genes effecting our appearance and mixed culture effecting the appearance on the skin

'The fact is, Scientists are still trying to understand how all of your genes combine; to show off the many traits you are showing off right now."

Commentary 'human classification' on an online forum

"The world today has several human classifications that have been successfully used to maintain a class system in which the flow of wealth is kept in check. The most successful of these classifications has been Race.
India for instance has the caste system which has kept a large section of the society in menial jobs and without basic rights (The Dalits) Who constitute a significantly dark skin population. The light skins ones are the ones we see on TV as the face of India, when indeed, the other ones are the most numerous in population. Same type of class system exists in Brazil, South Africa and everywhere else there are multiple races / Tribes."

Interview with HALF JAPANESE people in Shibuya

After researching into mixed raced people in Japan I. are across this video.

Rin is from Shibuya ...

so intersting to see for example the black mixed raced guy (blasian) speaking in exactly the same accent and tone as Rin in my audio. This is interesting because its uncommon and I have never seen this before. Interesting to notice that people make assumptions because of the persons appearance that they are foreign.

Reading the comments on this youtube video, I realised a fair amount of people where commenting on the fact that they found the last man interviewed to be very attractive. This relates to how we find unique people attractive and this is being very much celebrated in the young modelling industry.

Priyanka Yoshikawa - Miss Japan winner who is half Indian

"Talent cannot be controlled or ruled by caste, colour, gender or country of origin."

In Ms Yoshikawa's case - as in Ms Davuluri's before her - the biggest complaint seems to be the "lack of purity". But some are wondering whether this debate over purity has any relevance in today's globalised world.

These are the 6 images that I SWAPPED with my partner Rin. He explained what each of the images means to him and why he choose them as his key images to represent his 'personal culture'.

-"SHIBUYA" - Typical Tokyo
City full of so many lights , almost feels like a festival. Rin explained that this photo represents his younger self as he would always go out to the city to get drunk with his friends.

- Grandfather and Grandmother's Wedding photo - His grandmother wore a Kimono for her wedding - the most traditional Japanese clothing there is he explained. He says he was particularly interested by the 'weird Japanese hairstyle' his Grandmother styled for her wedding.

- Young Artist - A photo of Rin the first time he ever 'made art'. He was painting. He mentions tat in the background there is a very traditional Japanese window divider made from paper - "Shōji"

This idea of the paper 'Shōji' in his childhood photos inspires me to consider into researching into Japanese paper manipulations for this project.

- SlamDunk - Favorite Japanese Manga - about a basketball player, Rin explained that he used to play basketball as a child as his father being a Basketball coach. He explained that his father was 'very strict' growing up and would have rather had him go into basketball playing instead of the arts.

- Dying his hair - Blue (and other colours) - Throughout the years he's changed his hair colour and style in all sorts of colours from pink to green, to blue, I asked why did he do this and he replied that this habit came from the fact that he used to have very short, shaved hair always grouping up because of his strict father and how he always had to have "minimal hair styling' with him playing basketball. Now  that he practices his art more than sport he feels free to expresses himself more and feels the freedom from living away from home by dying his hair.

SCREEN SHOTS - My Indian friend messaged me some ideas of Traditional Indian crafts and artists techniques that I could possibly research into for use in this project.

PRIMARY RESEARCH - Vitiligo - Lack of melanin, a pigment in the skin

Dora Maar, 1936 - Man Ray

My Image - TATE modern

I met an incredibly unique looking lady at my work - I asked about her cultural backgrounds I knew she had to be mixed.. she told me about her family and their appearance. This inspires me to use the idea of mixed identity and aspects of a persons physical appearance to inspire the direction of my work.

MY PARTNER FOR THIS PROJECT - RIN from Japan

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

I decided to observe the physical appearance of my partner Rin. Although I know that in his cultural background his is full Japanese I was still interested to use his profile to gather ideas for my work. What strikes me about his appearance are his freckles. I thinks it's quite rare for a Japanese person to have freckles and this got me thinking about the RARE QUALITIES of people from mixed cultures. I would like to explore the effects of the skin and physical appearance in people from mixed culture and research into this further for ideas of mark making and drawing.

Primary Research - Southall

  • Outside a church in Southhall
  • Interesting to see a Christian church in an area that is so heavily surrounded by Hindu and Sikh Temples.
  • I love that in this photo I've managed to capture the MIX of different cultures through the different written languages on the board. I would love to included some forms of mixed cultural text in my work to enrich my ideas for prints. This will provide a sensible balance in my work in terms of adding text to a large quantity of imagery. I would like to research into artists and photographers that use text to convey a concept and enrich their images.
